Columbus Home Children’s Services
Tutor for boys, 12- to 17-years-old, in reading, English and math
Strong competency in the tutored subject area is required, bachelor’s degree preferred. Must be at least 25 years old. Time commitment: 4-12 hours per month
Observer for court-ordered supervised visitation between children and their non-custodial parent.
Must be at least 25 years old; training provided. Time commitment: 2-4 hours per week. Must commit to once every other week.
Co-facilitator for Parenting Education Seminars
Training provided. Must have experience facilitating groups. Classes meet every Thursday 5 to 8pm. Time commitment could be ongoing or bi monthly.
Toy Cleaner - a happy job!
Sort, clean and sanitize toys used by young guests. Time commitment: This can be a one time job or ongoing monthly 2-8 hours.
Provide a watermelon or ice cream party for the Children’s Emergency Shelter.
Must be at least 18 years old to participate. Afternoons between 1 and 4 would be great.
Children\'s Emergency Shelter Arts/crafts activities
Must be 18 years old. Time can be arranged with the Program Manager.
CHAP I office assistance
Flexible time scheduled with Program Manager.
Daily life skills
Lead sessions on general welfare including hygiene, laundry and maintaining a healthy life style.
Lead cooking and baking classes teaching residents how to prepare healthy meals. Flexible time Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm.
Assist residents with planting and growing vegetables. Flexible time Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm.
Party in a Box
Provide the necessary items for "Birthday in a box", "Fiesta in a Box" or "Barbecue in a Box"
Encourage socialization of guests, particularly the new or socially isolated, through participation in group activities. Time commitment: 2-8 hours per month
Help staff plan and implement interactive activities or entertainment for residents and guests. Time commitment: 2-8 hours per month

Administrative support in the office. Flexible hours any time Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm.
Pregnancy and Adoption Services
Pregnancy Center Advisor
Work with clients one-on-one and/or over the phone to assess clients needs and provide information. Training provided.
Pregnancy Help Center Fundraising Coordinator
Assist with baby bottle drives by stuffing bottles and scheduling drives. Flexible time.
Pregnancy Help Center Clothes Coordinator
Organize and find resources for maternity and baby items. Monday and Wednesday between 10am and 2pm.
Other Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals
Bilingual Office Hospitality Volunteer
For Office of Immigrant Services. Greet clients, answer phones and facilitate intake process. Must speak Spanish and English fluently. Time commitment minimum of 4 hours per week
Assist kitchen staff in weekly pick-up from Second Harvest food bank.
Crazy Quilt Friendship Center - Campbell County
Sorters and taggers for thrift store. Scheduling flexible.
Special Event Volunteers
An Emerald O'ccasion
Annual Dinner Gala, held each March. Proceeds benefit all area programs and services.
Common Good Golf Classic
An open tournament, held in late spring at Cherokee Country Club. Proceeds benefit all area programs and services.
Kids Helping Kids Fun Walk
Children's activities, food, and a fun walk all benefit Columbus Home Children's Services.
Parties with a Purpose A Party with a Purpose (PWP) is a gathering of friends, family, business associates or other acquaintances, hosted by friends of Catholic Charities, to raise awareness of and funds for the agency’s programs and services. PWPs are planned and hosted entirely by volunteers.
The format can be as casual or as formal as you like. Parties held to date have ranged from backyard cookouts to catered wine tastings, and everything in between. They have also been hosted by couples, individuals and groups. Ideas, copies of PWP invitations and advice from other hosts are all available.
Volunteer Opportunities for Knoxville Area Groups
Assist with transporting furniture and appliances for transitional housing clients and for general donation pick-up. Schedule is as needed; regular pick-up day for general donations could be established based on group’s availability.
Our three Knoxville facilities have ongoing needs for grounds and building maintenance, such as:
Spring and fall cleaning of windows and other exterior surfaces
Grounds clean-up, planting, mulching and weeding (to keep expenses low we only contract for mowing)
Seasonal assistance in the Samaritan Place courtyard with flower beds and vegetable garden
Provide dinner and/or social time for Columbus Home Group Home boys or Samaritan Place seniors, with opportunity to stay for games, movie or other appropriate activity.
Clean and maintain outdoor toys and playground equipment at Columbus Home’s Children’s Emergency Shelter and/or Parent Place location(s).
Throw a party for residential clients for holiday celebrations or "just because."
Children, families and seniors in our Columbus Home Children’s Services, Samaritan Place and transitional housing programs need assistance year-round with seasonal clothing, hygiene and household items.
